Denver Public School P.E. Teachers and the Gates Staff have fun for a Good Cause!
The Gates Tennis Center and Denver Public Schools join forces to bring the game of tennis to juniors that may not otherwise have the opportunity to play. P.E. teachers from Denver Public Schools got a taste of what their kids can receive at the Gates Tennis Center. Teachers got to be the students for a day as they ran through a variety of drills while receiving tips on forehands and backhands. We thank all the teachers that participated and look forward to seeing their students out on the court.
Who will be the Next Venus & Serena Williams?
Calling all future tennis stars! Gates Tennis Center in Cherry Creek is reaching out to hundreds of Denver kids for a chance to learn the great game of tennis. “5th Grade Passport” is a new program aimed at helping 5th graders in Denver take up tennis by providing them with an introductory clinic, continued instruction, court time, equipment, and basic knowledge of the game. It is a collaborative effort between the Colorado Tennis Association, Denver Public Schools, Metro Denver Sports Commission, and the new Gate's management team of Eric Rose and Sam Hitman.
Gates Tennis Center held its first special event this Fall with a turn-out of more than 200 fifth graders. To be selected each student wrote an essay about why they would like to learn how to play tennis. Once selected 100's of smiling faces arrived at Gates for their introductory clinic. The kids had a chance to see an exhibition of top players in Colorado, receive instruction from some of the best pros, and as a bonus win tickets to see “Venus & Serena Williams” play here in Colorado on November 30th.
The enthusiasm was contagious for both students and teachers. This is just the beginning as the “5th Grade Passport” will become a new addition to the Gates Tennis Center in an effort to grow the game and make it accessible to everyone.
